Not a brokerage statement. Your checking and savings PDF, and what to scan for in ten minutes each month.

Brokerage statements get the thinkpieces. Bank statements catch the fees.
Go in that order and stop when the ten minutes are up. The point isn’t completeness, it’s catching the two or three things that would otherwise run for a year unnoticed.
Fees are the highest-yield line. Maintenance fees reappear when a balance dips below a minimum or a qualifying direct deposit stops, and both happen quietly. An ATM fee or two is annoying; a $12 monthly maintenance fee that restarted in March is $144 by year end. If you find one, call and ask what triggered it rather than just noting the amount.
Interest is the second check worth doing properly. Multiply the balance by the advertised rate, divide by twelve, and compare. Off by a rounding error is normal. Off by half is a sign the rate changed, the balance tier moved, or the money isn’t in the account you think it is.
Mobile apps show pending authorizations that can drop off or finalize at a different amount (gas stations, hotels). Reconcile against posted activity when accuracy matters.
The statement only contains posted activity, which is exactly why it’s the version to reconcile against. Your app’s balance mid-month includes holds that may never become charges. If a number in your sheet disagrees with a number in the app, check the statement before assuming either is wrong.
Watch the statement period boundary too. A purchase made on the 30th that posts on the 2nd belongs to the next statement, which is the usual explanation for a month that looks unexpectedly cheap followed by one that looks expensive. The reconciliation habit is what stops that from turning into a phantom trend.
Download PDFs monthly if you might dispute a charge later. Chat threads disappear; statements linger.
Banks vary in how long they keep statements available online, and access disappears entirely if you close the account. Anything you might need for a dispute, a loan application, a lease, or a tax question is worth having as a local file. One folder per year, named by account and month, takes about a minute to maintain and removes an entire category of future scramble.
Even with transactions syncing into a spreadsheet, daily on Premium or on demand on Free, the statement is still the bank’s official view when something disagrees. The sheet is the workbench; the statement is the referee.
